Oscar Lee Holland, Sr., 89, of Florence, SC, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2021. He was born in Newton Grove, NC, the fifth of six children born to the late George Roscoe and Lola Mae Lee Holland. He is also predeceased by one sister, Winnie Merrell and three brothers, Maurice, Murray and Monnie Holland. Oscar grew up on a farm in the Herring Community of Sampson County, NC. He was married to Patti Moore Holland of Whiteville, NC and they had four children, ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grand-children. He loved his family, golf, oil painting, piano, organ, antique collecting, writing and surfing the internet.
Oscar graduated from Herring High School in Clinton, NC, Elon College in Elon College, NC, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and The Citadel in Charleston, SC. He did his Counseling Practicum in the VA Hospital in Charleston. Oscar was certified by the SC Baptist Convention in Interim Ministry and was the Intentional Interim Specialist form the Center for Congregational Health at NC Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC.
He worked at many different jobs as he was getting his education, including retail sales, billing clerk, stocking clerk, teaching school and coaching basketball at Fair Bluff High and teaching school at Nakina High School in NC.
Oscar served as Pastor at many churches over the years including Smyrna Baptist in Whiteville, NC, Reedy Creek Baptist in Marion, SC, Ebenezer Baptist in Florence, SC, James Island Baptist in Charleston, SC, Rosewood Baptist in Columbia, Sunset Park Baptist in Wilmington, NC and Bedon Baptist in Walterboro, SC.
He was appointed to the Chaplaincy in 1977 and served as Intermittent Chaplain at the VA Hospital in Charleston. He served as a facilitatory for Minister’s Growth Conference, was a Certified Masterlife Consultant for Discipleship Training Division, co-led Masterlife Workshops in 6 Southeastern states. He was a moderator of Florence and Charleston Associations; was the Chairman of Camp Committee when Charleston bought Bonnie Doone Plantation and led in the development of the Conference Center. Oscar served on the staff of Cooper River Baptist Church as Pastor’s Assistant for Counseling and served as Interim Pastor for Cooper River Baptist in N. Charleston, Welsh Neck Baptist in Society Hill, Providence Baptist in Monks Corner and Immanuel Baptist Church in Florence.
Surviving is his wife, Patti Moore Holland; four children, Kim Holland Andrews (Billy); Lee Holland (Jan); Kelly Holland Polk; and Amy Holland Swetenburg (Jay); ten grandchildren; Stacey McGhee (Shawn); Wesley Andrews (Sage); Jeremy Andrews (Lindsay); Katey McCoy (James); Jacob Holland (Bethany); Meg Salmon (Sean); Chad Polk (Brittani); Christine Dodd (Michael); Meredith Swetenburg; and Brooke Runzo (Ethan); eighteen great-grandchildren; Haily and Aidan McGhee; Wyatt, Walker, Lalla and Waylon Andrews; Henry Andrews; Liam, Jack and Carys McCoy; Bear and Judah Holland; Riggs Salmon; Kaelynn, Elijah, Karli and Jaxon Polk; and Emerson Dodd; and a sister; Carolyn Warren (Albert).
A church-led memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence, SC. A reception will follow the service in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Gymnasium. Cain Calcutt Funeral Home is honored to serve the Holland family.
