Martha Ann Sims Ruff

Martha Ann Sims Ruff, 88, of Florence, SC, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 after a brief illness.  She was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Joe and Susie Springs Sims.  In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Walter “Leo” Ruff, Jr. and a brother, Marion Sims. 

Mrs. Ruff graduated from Bonaire High School, class of 1952 and then Carolina College of Commerce in Florence.  She was a secretary with Floor Covering Specialists in Florence.  She was a member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years and was active on numerous committees and held various leadership roles in the community.

Surviving are her sons, R. Sidney Ruff of Florence and Walter L. Ruff III (Tiara) of Tennessee; grandson, Walter Leo Ruff IV of Tennessee; brother, J.E. Sims (Frances) of Florence; two sisters, Merlee Shumpert (Charles) of Florence and Molly Pittman (Wendall); and a sister-in-law, Sally Sims of Raleigh, NC.  Mrs. Ruff’s extended family includes Wallace and Mary Caroline Vaught and family. 

The family wishes to thank the staff of McLeod Hospital and Grand Strand Health for their kindness and support during her illness. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 20, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Florence.  The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall at the church. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to First Baptist Church, 300 S. Irby Street, Florence, SC 29501.
