Johnny O’neal Godwin, 76, of Pamplico, SC, passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2023. He was born in Lake City, SC, a son of the late Mary Kathleen Calcutt Godwin and John Euford Godwin. In addition to his parents, he is also predeceased by a sister, Lynette Godwin Livingston.
Johnny was a graduate of Hannah-Pamplico High School. He proudly served in the US Army in the Vietnam War as a crew chief in a helicopter unit, B-Company 101st AVN Battalion, 101st Airborne Division. He was a Master Mason with Pamplico Lodge #324 and was a member of the Omar Shrine, Jazz Morticians, as well as a member of the Jaycees. Johnny retired from Dun Rite Dirt Works where he was the Owner/Operator of the business. He was a faithful member of Willow Creek Baptist Church where he was known as “The Candy Man”. He loved his family and children and was loved by many. He enjoyed racing, especially boats and go-carts.
Surviving is his wife of 34 years, Hilda Faye Gibson Godwin; children, Regina LeMaster Matthews (Johnny), Johnny O’neal Godwin II (Theresa), Rodney Andrews Godwin (Denise) and Paula Gray Swails (Kevin); grandchildren, Makayla Marie Brown (Taylor), Christian Gage Godwin (Allison), Hunter O’neal Godwin, Alexis Grace Pearce, Carmen Faith O’Brian, Brenna Hope O’Brian, Justin Lee Cromer (Anna-Marie), John Austin Matthews, Abigail Dawn Godwin, Emma Leigh Godwin, Casey Hunter Swails (Ariel), Katlyn Amber Swails Smith (Scott), and Ruby Marler; great-grandchildren, Sullivan Marie Brown, Lydia Rhodes Purvis, Hadon Guy Swells, Liele Swails and Blair Arnette Smith; a brother, Burl Godwin (Teresa); and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service, directed by Cain Calcutt Funeral Home, will be held at 12:30 PM on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Compassion Church in Florence. The family will receive friends from 11:30 until 12:30 PM at the church prior to the service. Inurnment with Military Honors and Masonic Rites will follow at Florence National Cemetery.
