Jerry Donald Hayes

Jerry Donald Hayes, 80, entered into eternal rest on August 20, 2021. He was born on March 10, 1941 in Green Sea, SC to the late Averette and Bernice Hayes. After finishing school, Jerry served in the Army for a two year tour. Jerry was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Florence, where he served faithfully on the grounds and property committee and in many other capacities including deacon, usher, sound system technician, and in the bus ministry by driving the bus for youth and seniors, He worked for Southern Bell, which later became AT&T/Lucent Technologies, and retired in the mid 90’s. He formed many lasting friendships with those he worked with, as well as those he helped with his humble and faithful service in his church and community. He loved helping others, especially the elderly, with the many gifts God gave him. He also loved to laugh and joke with anyone that crossed his path. To know Jerry was to love Jerry. His hobbies included flying model airplanes, collecting vintage cars and going to car shows, and collecting trains and Hess trucks. Fellowship with family and friends, especially if a good meal was involved, always brought joy to Jerry. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and a very important part of his life.

Jerry is preceded in death in addition to his parents by his son, Donald Bradford Hayes; two brothers, Billy and Michael Hayes; and a sister, Joanne Floyd.

Surviving is his loving wife of 53 years, Anita Ford Hayes; a son, Jerry Robin Hayes and his wife Tricia; a daughter, Jada Hayes Griffith; six grandchildren, Taylor Lynne Hayes, Lawson Hayes Griffith, Jenna Robyn Hayes, Jerred Dalton Griffith, Charlton Holt Griffith, and Caden Stone Griffith; four sisters, Judy Windham (twin of Jerry), Barbara Wayne Gerald (Bernice), Jean Garrell, and Melanie McDowell(Harry); a sister-in-law who was like a sister, Rita Ford Bryant and her husband Jimmy; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at Calvary Baptist Church in Florence. Visitation will be at 2:00 PM preceding the service.  Cain Calcutt Funeral Home is honored to serve the Hayes family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church or St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
