James (Jim) Rivers, originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, and later residing in Florence, South Carolina, peacefully passed away on November 22, 2023. Preceding him in death was his partner of 37 years, Ward Yarborough, and his parents, Elizabeth and Burns Rivers. Jim is survived by his two brothers; John (Loretta) Rivers and Frank (Robin) Rivers; three nieces, Sharon Rivers, Shannon Sullivan, Mary Allyson Gamble; a nephew, Evan Rivers. Additionally, Jim leaves behind two great-nephews, Briggs Sullivan and Rivers Gamble and three great-nieces, Marlee and Madeline Gamble and Aislyn Sullivan, and is fondly remembered by his loving cousin, Coleen Finklea.
A dedicated educator, Jim also owned The Traveling Menu Catering Company in Charlotte. Following his retirement, he committed his time to embellishing St. Martin's Episcopal Church with floral arrangements for special occasions and holidays. Jim extended his generosity by volunteering at the local homeless shelter and utilizing his passion for gardening to help community members cultivate their own floral gardens. Those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with Jim were blessed by his affectionate and compassionate nature. He will be dearly missed.
Graveside services to honor Jim's memory will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 1510 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.
