Elizabeth “Betty” Bryan Hicks, 90, of Florence, SC, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. She was born in Greenwood, SC, a daughter of the late Janelle Reynolds Bryan and the late John “Pete” Butler Bryan. She is also predeceased by her husband, Boyd Stith Hicks and two sisters, Rachel Bryan Wertz and Ruth Marshall Bryan.
Mrs. Hicks graduated from Greenwood High School in 1950 and received her BA in Elementary Education from Furman University in 1954. She then did graduate work at USC and Francis Marion. After her education, she taught elementary school in Florence District 1 schools for 30 years. Betty did volunteer work in the local schools and with Meals on Wheels. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Florence, including the “Over 50 Year Club”, and was an active member of “Good News Sunday School” until becoming disabled. Betty was a member of Junior League Sustainers and of Kappa Kappa Iota Delta Conclave of Florence, which is an educator sorority.
Betty is survived by her daughter and son in law, Elizabeth Hicks Allison and Hugh Taylor Allison of York, SC; her son, Robert Bryan Hicks of Lorton, VA; grandchild, Erin Allison Smith (John Daniel Smith); and two great-grandchildren, Emelia Anne Smith and Parker Elizabeth Smith, all of Lexington, SC.
A graveside service, directed by Cain Calcutt Funeral Home, will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will speak to those in attendance following the service.
