Richard E. Miles, 79, of Florence, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2019, at McLeod Hospice House. He was born in Olanta, SC, a son of the late Archie Earline Miles and Edith Stone Miles. He is also predeceased by four brothers, Alvin, Raymond, Eugene and P.G. Miles; and a son-in-law, Stewart Gandy.
Richard served with the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was formerly employed by Union Carbide/LTEC as a machinist. He taught Sunday School and did outreach ministry for nursing homes for many years and he attended Effingham Church of God. He played and sang with the Starlight Gospel Singers. He loved working on small engines and was considered a jack of all trades.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Deloris Ann Saint Miles; his son, Walter “Wally” Miles (Erica Stroud Miles); daughter, Susan Rachelle Gandy; four grandchildren, Claudia Reign Stewart, Summer Miles, Dustin (Wendy) Leiss and Brittany Gandy; two great-grandchildren, Jack Leiss and Lily Stewart; a brother, Charles Edward (Louise) Miles; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service, directed by Cain Calcutt Funeral Home, will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, July 29, 2019 at Effingham Church of God, with burial to follow at Florence National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 12 until 1:00 PM, just prior to the service.
