Mary Helen Hemingway Brown, 96, of Florence, SC, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2019 at her residence. Mary Helen was born in Hemingway, SC, a daughter of the late William Thomas and Helen Cheatham Hemingway. She is also preceded in death by her husband, William Yancey Brown, Jr., a son, Thomas Edward “Tommy” Brown, and a sister, Gary Dixie Hemingway Watson. Mary Helen graduated with her bachelor’s from Winthrop University and retired as a supervisor with D.S.S. She was a member of Central UMC for 67 years, where she was a member of the Christian Family Sunday School Class, the Joy Anderson Circle and started the First Food Pantry. She was one of the oldest members of the Fitness forum, enjoying exercising until her late 80’s. Mary Helen loved reading, playing cards and traveling with the Sierra Club and friends. Surviving are her three children, William Y. “Bill” (Karen) Brown, III, Mary Katherine “Kathy” Brown, and Susan “Susie” Brown, a grandson, Jacob William “Jake” (Shannon) Brown, three step-grandchildren, Michael Edward (Tamara) Duncan, Barbara Victoria Duncan (McLean) Boyd, and Carrie Elizabeth Duncan, and two step great-grandchildren, Haven Amberleigh Duncan and Robert McLean “Bo” Boyd, IV. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, July 1, 2019 at Central United Methodist Church directed by Cain Calcutt Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services in the commons area. The family would like to thank Central’s Meals on Wheels through Bazen’s Restaurant and McLeod Hospice for all the love and care give to Mrs. Brown and family. Memorials may be made to Central UMC or McLeod Hospice.
