Lawrence Warren Copeland, 96, died Tuesday, September 11, 2018 in Florence after aspiration pneumonia. He was born August 15, 1922 in Bethune, SC where he graduated from Bethune High School in 1939. Lawrence married Xenia Mae Hutton June 12, 1942 at Central Methodist Church where they remained members until their deaths.
Lawrence joined the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII, serving on U.S. soil from 1942 to his discharge in 1945. He made his career with the U.S. Postal Service in Florence and remained a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Associations after his retirement.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Xenia; his parents, Jack and Alene Outlaw Copeland; brother, PFC Wilbur “Pete” Copeland; sister, Jackalene “Jackie” Searson; and daughter, Patricia “Patsy” Copeland Watts.
He is survived by his son, Lawrence “Larry” Copeland of Sanford, FL; brothers Michael (Pamela) Copeland of Hanahan, SC and Thomas Copeland of Charleston, SC; granddaughter, Melanie (Timothy) Markwordt and great-granddaughter, Emmalee Markwordt of Jacksonville, FL; grandson, Samuel Watts of FL; and many other family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Central United Methodist Church, directed by Cain-Calcutt Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow in the Florence National Cemetery, with military Honors.
In leu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Epworth Children’s Home, 2900 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29206 in Lawrence’s name.
